Introducing Uncivil, A New Kind of History Podcast about the Civil War

A smattering of headlines across the country read: “Events Surrounding White Nationalist Rally In Virginia Turn Fatal,” – NPR; “Charlottesville Tries To Pick Up Pieces After Day Of Deadly Unrest,” — PBS; and “State of Emergency in Virginia as White Nationalists March” – The New York Times. These headlines aren’t from a bygone era of a divided country, the Jim Crow South, or the Civil Rights Movement. These are from August 12, 2017 — just a few short weeks ago.

Over and over we hear on the news: America is more divided than it ever has been. And amid all of the division, violence, and derision, you might have seen a trending hashtag pick up steam: #ThisIsNotUs. But, the fact is — this is us. America has always been divided. And now, we’re going back to the moment when that divide turned into war.

Uncivil, Gimlet Media’s new history podcast, brings you stories that were left out of the official history of the Civil War, ransacks America’s past, and takes on the history you grew up with. We bring you untold stories about resistance, covert operations, corruption, mutiny, counterfeiting, antebellum drones, and so much more. And we connect these forgotten struggles to the political battlefield we’re living on right now. The story of the Civil War — the story of slavery, confederate monuments, racism — is the story of America.

Uncivil is hosted by Chenjerai Kumanyika, author, journalist, and professor of journalism and communications at Rutgers University, and Jack Hitt, a Peabody Award-winning journalist, author and radio producer.

The first episode premieres Wednesday, October 4, but you can listen to the trailer for the series and subscribe right now. To get early access and hear Uncivil before anyone else, visit Uncivil.show for more information.
