>> Rachel: It’s Communication Week, and today we’ve got some historical I Spies for you.
Here’s your first one.
I’m in a deep, dark cave. Up on the ceiling, I see beautiful carvings and paintings. It’s carved right into the ceiling and walls, and it’s colored in with red and black.
So, what are these symbols? What do I spy?
>> GROUP: : Parietal art!
>> KID: HUH?
>> Rachel: I know, that's a big word right?
Switch your brushing to the other side of the top of your mouth, and keep on brushing.
Parietal means art that’s been created in a cave!

>> Rachel: Cave art is one of the OLDEST examples of communication still around today!
Scientist’s don’t know EXACTLY WHY this art was made or who made it, but whoever it was was born WAY before your grandparent’s grandparent’s grandparents were even born!
The cave art is a type of visual communication, and tells scientists a little bit about the lives of the people who did the paintings.

I’m in the deserts of Egypt, a country in Africa, inside a big stone building. On the wall there are a whole bunch of different small pictures. I see birds, something that looks like an eye, and even shapes that look like people!
So, what are these symbols? What do I spy?
>> GROUP: : Hieroglyphics!
>> Rachel: Hieroglyphics!
Switch your brushing to the other side of the bottom of your mouth, and brush your front teeth too!
Hieroglyphics were a type of VISUAL communication used by ancient Egyptians! Hieroglyphs are small pictures. And they work a lot like words. When put you put a bunch together they tell a story. Hieroglyphics were used to describe great Egyptian battles, or describe the lives of important Egyptian leaders.
