It’s Poetry Week, and today you’re going to help us write some poems!
But first start brushing on the top of your mouth on one side, and brush the molars in the way back too.
>> KIDS: 3, 2, 1 brush!
>> Rachel: Today we’re talking about rhyming.
Rhyming is when words sound similar. Like how CAT, BAT, HAT and CHAT all sound the same. That’s because they rhyme!
Here’s an example of a limerick
There was an Old Man with a beard,
Who said, "It is just as I feared!—
Two Owls and a Hen, four Larks and a Wren,
Have all built their nests in my beard.
In the limerick, beard and feared RHYME!
Switch to the other side of the top of your mouth, and make little circles with your brush around each tooth.
Today you’re going to be looking for rhymes in limericks.
Listen to the whole poem, and pay attention to the sounds at the end of each line … they’ll give you a clue about what rhymes with the last word.
So here’s your first one:
There once was a very big cat. (SFX)
Who left a dent where he sat. (SFX)
A big orange boy, who brought us all joy
There’s more to love when your pet’s _____
(SFX huh)
Switch to the bottom of your mouth, and give your tongue a brush too
Ok so … cat, sat .. what’s the rhyming word?
FAT.
That’s right! Here’s the whole thing again:
There once was a very big cat. (SFX)
Who left a dent where he sat. (SFX)
A big orange boy, who brought us all joy
There’s more to love when your pet’s FAT.
Ok here’s your next limerick.
My dog loves to run in the park (SFX)
Chasing a stick is a lark (SFX)
But when a squirrel’s nearby, you’ll hear him cry
When he lets out a mighty _____
Switch to the other side of the bottom of your mouth, and brush your front teeth too.
Ok park, lark … What’s the rhyming word?!
BARK!
That’s right! Here’s the whole thing again:
My dog loves to run in the park (SFX)
Chasing a stick is a lark (SFX)
But when a squirrel’s nearby, you’ll hear him cry
When he lets out a mighty BARK.
