>> Rachel: Good morning, it’s time for Chompers! Your twice daily toothbrushing show.
Start brushing on the top of your mouth. Pick a side, and brush in little circles around each tooth
>> KIDS: 3, 2, 1 brush!
>> Rachel: It’s Inventors Week, and today we’re playing a game of I Spy. I’ll SPY an invention, and you have to guess what it is.
Here's your first one:
(SFX CAR DOOR BEEPING)
I’m in my car (SFX ENGINE START) and I want directions to where I am going. There’s a computer in my car where I put in the address, and it tells me (SFX COMPUTER VOICE)
“In 500 meters make a left.”
What is this device? What do I spy?
Find out after you switch your brushing to the other side of the top of your mouth, and brush the molars in the back too.
That device is…
>> GROUP: A GPS!
>> Rachel: GPS is a system that helps is figure out where in the world something is. It uses SATELLITES, which are machines that we send into OUTER SPACE, (SFX) to send information on invisible waves in the air! (SFX)
We learned how to use those invisible waves from research done by HEDY LAMARR. Hedy Lamarr was a famous movie star when your grandparents were kids, AND she was an inventor!
Switch to the bottom of your mouth, and but don’t brush too hard.
Here’s your next I Spy:
(SFX ENGINE) I’m driving in my car, and I see it starts to rain (SFX RAIN IN CAR) I flip a switch and see two rubber arms start moving back and forth (SFX WINDSHIELD WIPERS) across the window at the front of the car, WIPING the water away.
What are these rubber arms? What do I spy?
>> GROUP: WINDSHIELD WIPERS!
>> Rachel: Windshield Wipers!
Switch to the other side of the bottom of your mouth, and brush your front teeth too.
Windshield wipers clean the windshield of a car when rain or snow starts falling. Mary Anderson came up with the idea in 1903, but at the time no one thought her invention was important. But we know today windshield wipers make driving safer -- and all cars come with windshield wipers based on Mary’s designs!
Thanks Mary!
That’s it for Chompers today. Come back tonight for more inventors and until then,
>> KIDS: 3, 2, 1 spit!
