BRUSH!

(SPLASH SFX)

>> Rachel: Today we’re making waves (SFX SPLASH) by going deep into the ocean. (SFX BLOOP BLOOP) We’re on a mission to see what kinds of teeth you can find under the sea!

Our first fishy friend is the Baleen whale. (SFX SPOUT WHALE SOUNDS)

Did you know that Baleen whales have teeth that look just like hair? (HAIR SCRATCH SFX) And when they smile, it looks like there’s a mustache inside their mouths! (SFX BROOM SWEEPING SOUND)

Ok, time to switch sides! Stay on your top teeth, but make those brushing circles on the other side of your mouth.

When Baleen whales are hungry, they just swim toward their food with their mouths wide open, and use their bristly, hairy teeth to catch tiny fish to eat! It’s like an ocean vacuum cleaner. (SFX AHHHHHH OR VACUUM CLEANER) Can you imagine if we ate that way?

And now, switch to the bottom of your mouth, and pick a side to brush on.

What about a shark that has teeth like a chainsaw! (SFX CHAINSAW)

The Helicoprion was a shark like no other, with a wheel of teeth behind its bottom lip! Helicoprions would chew their food by spinning it through their teeth (SFX WHIRLING SOUND).

Unfortunately, the Helicoprion is extinct.

Extinct means: An animal used to exist, but it doesn’t anymore.

Switch to the OTHER side of the bottom of your mouth!

So how do we know that Helicoprions did exist? It’s because scientists have found FOSSILS.

Fossils are from a really long time ago, and they can include bones, and … TEETH!

Now that you know more about some deep sea dentals, I have a challenge for you! If you see a fish today, maybe at home or at school, take a good look at its mouth! [AHH SFX] See if you can see teeth, or lips, or gums.

And come back to Chompers tonight to find out what other sea creatures have funky teeth. Ok ready? Three, two, one, spit!
