>> Rachel: It’s Earth Week! And today we’ve got some conservationist I Spies for you. That means I’ll describe something and you have to guess what it is!
Here’s your first one:
I’m in the street and I see a trash bag. The bag is clear, so I can see through it. Interesting... there is no food waste in there. What I see is a bunch of empty cans, glass bottles, and plastic bottles.
What kind of trash is that? What do I Spy?
RECYCLING!
Switch to the other side of the top of your mouth and keep brushing.
[Switch Bell]
Recycling is trash we put aside to be saved and RECYCLED or turned into something new! So your old milk jugs might be turned into a plastic lawn chair! Not everything can be recycled.
But things that are made of paper, plastic, metal or glass normally can be.
So we put them in a recycling bin to send them to a place where they’ll be RECYCLED.
Switch to the bottom of your mouth, and brush the molars in the way back
[Switch Bell]
Here’s another I Spy:
I see a small pile of rotting stuff. I think I recognize some egg shells, bread, cheese, carrots, beets, and other veggies. Oh gross, I see some worms crawling around. They seem to like it here.
What kind of waste is this? What do I spy? Shout it out!
COMPOST!
Switch your brushing to the other side of the bottom of your mouth, but don't brush too hard
Compost is like recycling, but for natural waste so mostly food. Over time the pile of compost is turning into a new soil and food for worms, fungi and bacteria.
Most people in the United States throw away four pounds of trash every day. So imagine the pile of trash that all the people in the world throw away everyday. It’s ENORMOUS, GIGANTIC, ASTRONOMICAL! And that pile of trash badly affects the planet. By recycling and composting we reduce our waste!
That’s it for Chompers today, but come back tonight! Until then…
