>> Rachel: Good morning! It’s time for Chompers, you twice daily toothbrushing show!

Start brushing on the top of your mouth, and brush in little circles around each tooth

>> Kids: 3, 2, 1, brush!

>> Rachel: It’s Folktales Week and today our story is a Hausa story.  Hausa is a language, and it’s also a group of people who SPEAK Hausa, and live in countries in Africa like Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana and Sudan.

Today’s folktale might sound a little familiar to you … because it’s a PUZZLE!  LISTEN CLOSELY because you’re going to want to try to solve the puzzle … and THEN, once you do, you’re going to want to tell this Hausa folktale to your friends, to see if THEY can solve the puzzle too.

Switch your brushing to the other side of the top of your mouth but don’t brush too hard

Ready for the story?

>> KIDS: YES!

>> Rachel: Ok, here we go!

Once upon a time there was a man who needed to leave his village.

And he had to take EVERYTHING HE OWNED!

>> ZAC: EVERYTHING?

>> Rachel: Yup, that’s right, EVERYTHING.  Luckily though, that wasn’t very much stuff.

Switch to the bottom of your mouth, and brush the inside, outside and chewing side of each tooth.

Here’s what the man had.

He had one leopard.

SFX LEOPARD

He had one goat

SFX GOAT

And one yam.

SFX YAM

>> ZAC: Wait, I know what a leopard and a goat are, but what’s a yam?

>> Rachel: A yam is a vegetable, like a sweet potato.  And a yam is exactly the kind of thing a goat (SFX GOAT) would like to eat.

I’ll tell you after you switch your brushing to the other side of the bottom of your mouth, and don’t forget the molars in the back

But here’s the thing: A GOAT (SFX GOAT) is exactly the kind of thing a LEOPARD would like to eat. (SFX LEOPARD)

And that’s going to be a problem for the man in our story … because how is he going to take all of them with him AT THE SAME TIME… without the goating eating the yam, and the leopard eating the goat!

We’ll tell you TONIGHT when you come back for more Chompers.  But until then, it’s time to rinse with water, and…

>>Kids: 3, 2, 1 spit!
