>> RACHEL: Good morning! It’s time for Chompers, your morning and night toothbrushing show.
Start brushing on the top of your mouth. Pick a side, and brush in little circles around each tooth.
>> KIDS: 3, 2, 1 brush!
>> RACHEL: Its Musicians week, and today we’ve got some I Spies for you to figure out. I'll describe something, and you have to guess what it is.
Here’s your first one:
[CLASSROOM SOUNDS]
>> RACHEL: I see a big room full of students. They all have different instruments, and they are practicing playing together. They are looking at someone at the front of a room. This person is clapping the beat to a song...
[CLAPPING A BEAT]
>> RACHEL: -and trying to make sure everyone knows how to play the song they are learning.
So who is this person? Who do I spy?
>> RACHEL: Find out after you switch your brushing to the other side of the top of your mouth…
[SWITCH BELL]
>> RACHEL: -but don’t brush too hard.
The answer is:
>> GROUP: A Music Teacher!
>> RACHEL: A music teacher.
[MUSIC BEGINS]
>> RACHEL: Music teachers are the people who teach future musicians how to play! Some music teachers help students learn how to play an instrument, like horns...
[TRUMPET]
>> RACHEL: or piano...
[PIANO]
>> RACHEL: or drums.
[DRUMS]
>> RACHEL: Other music teachers help students learn how to read and write music. Music can be written on a piece of paper, in a language called musical notation.
Switch your brushing to the bottom of your mouth...
[SWITCH BELL]
>> RACHEL: -and brush the inside, outside and chewing side of each tooth.
[MUSIC ENDS]
>> RACHEL: Here’s your next I Spy:
[SHOWTUNES BEGIN]
>> RACHEL: I am in a big theater. I see actors on the stage singing, and the audience clapping for them. But under the stage, I see a group of musicians. There’s a pianist, a drummer, some string players, and a conductor...
[CONDUCTOR TAPS BATON]
>> RACHEL: who is leading them all. They are playing the music for the show that’s being performed on the stage!
Who are these musicians? What do I spy?
>> GROUP: The pit orchestra!
>> RACHEL: The pit orchestra!
Switch your brushing to the other side of the bottom of your mouth...
[SWITCH BELL]
>> RACHEL: -and brush the molars in the way back too. ‘
Pit musicians are the people who play live music for theaters and opera houses. They are called the PIT orchestra because they usually play from an area under the stage called the orchestra pit. Usually there is a conductor that leads the musicians in the pit AND the singers on stage. It's the conductor's job to make sure that the singers and the musicians all work together.
[SHOWTUNES END]
