>> Rachel: Hey Is there anyone there?

Good. Because it’s SOUNDS week on Chompers, your morning and night toothbrushing show.

Start brushing on the top of your mouth on one side, and make little circles with your brush around each tooth.

>> KIDS: 3, 2, 1 brush!

>> Rachel: Listen closely, because today we have a QUIZ (SFX)

There’s a tiny body part inside your ear that helps you hear sounds. What’s that body part called?

Is it:

The eardrum? (SFX DRUM)

The ear retina? (SFX LASER)

Or

The ear nostrils? (SFX SNIFF)

To figure it out, let’s learn more about how sound works!

Switch to the other side of the top of your mouth, and brush the molars in the way back (SFX BELL).

Sound travels as a WAVE - we call them sound waves.

>> KID: Like the ocean?

>> Rachel: Not exactly … sound  waves are VIBRATIONS that travel through the air from the place where the sound was made to the place where the sound is heard.

When you hear a sound, it’s because the vibration of the sound wave traveled from where it was made … to your ear!

I’ll explain more after you switch to the bottom of your mouth, and brush your front teeth too.

You can’t see sound waves. They are INVISIBLE. But sometimes you can FEEL them!

>> KIDS: Huh?

>> Rachel: I’ll show you! Put your fingers on your neck, right below your chin. Ok. Now let’s Hum together! (SFX Humming)  Do you feel anything?

>> KIDS: Kind of.

>> Rachel: Switch to the other side of the bottom of your mouth, and give your tongue a brush too (SFX).

What you feel are VIBRATIONS.

When you hum, or when you sing or talk, you make sound waves, that VIBRATE. The waves travel through the air to your ear and when the vibrations arrive at your ear … you HEAR them!

Like, when you clap your hands. (SFX clapping hands)-- the SOUND WAVE travels through the air, and then the vibration of the wave arrives at your ear -- and you hear it!

So back to our quiz. We want to know… What part of your body hears sound?

Is it:

The eardrum?

The ear retina?

Or

The ear nostrils?

You’ll have to come back to Chompers tonight to hear the answer! Until then...

>> KIDS: 3, 2, 1 spit!
