>> Rachel: Welcome back to Chompers! Your morning and night tooth brushing show. Start brushing on the top of your mouth, on one side, and make little circles around each tooth.

>> KIDS: 3, 2, 1 brush!!

>> Rachel: It’s Communication Week on Chompers, and tonight we have more I Spies for you about the history of communication!

Ready for your first one?

I see a grown up, sitting at a campfire, surrounded by a group of children. She’s telling them a story, and she has the attention of everyone around her. It must be a good story, because they are listening to every word!

So, what type of communication is this? What do I spy?

>> GROUP: : Storytelling!

>> Rachel: Storytelling!

Switch your brushing to the other side of the top of your mouth, and give your front teeth a brush too.

Storytelling is the art of… telling stories! (Tada!) Before people were good at writing things down, they used TELL stories to pass down information from one person to the next.

Some stories were make believe. Others were stories that actually happened and helped us remember important people or events from the past.

Switch your brushing to the bottom of your mouth, and spit if you need to.

Ready for your next I Spy?

I’m in a library, I take something off the shelf and open it up. There’s a bunch of words written down in here, pages and pages of them! And there’s rows and rows of these things in the library! More than I’d ever had time to read!

So, what are all these things, what do I Spy?

>> GROUP: : (Loudly) Books!

>> Rachel: SHH! (Whispered) Books!

Switch your brushing to the other side of the bottom of your mouth, and keep on brushing!

Books are a great way to communicate, and a very common way for people to pass on stories! (Once upon a time, in a land far away…) Many of the stories that used to be told around the campfire before we had writing, can now be written down in books so people wouldn’t forget them. Once you learn how to read books, it can unlock whole new worlds to learn about and explore.  That’s what’s great about WRITTEN communication!

That’s the last page of this book for today, (BOOK) but come back tomorrow for more communication! And now it’s time to,

>> KIDS: 3, 2, 1 spit!!
