[THEME SONG BEGINS]

>>RACHEL: Good morning, it’s time for Chompers: your morning and night toothbrushing show.

It’s Robot Week. Today we’ve got some Robot RIDDLES for you to figure out.

Start brushing on the top of your mouth on one side, but don’t brush too hard.

>>KIDS: 3, 2, 1 brush!

[THEME SONG ENDS]

>>RACHEL: Here’s your first riddle:

A tool used by robots

Like a glowing beam of light

Used to sense the things around them

Telling it to go left or move right

What am I talking about?

>>GROUP: A laser!

>>RACHEL: Laser light beams are a type of sensor that can help measure how far away things are. Robots use SENSORS to get a SENSE of their surroundings. They’re like the robot’s eyes and ears.

Switch your brushing to the other side of the top of your mouth…

[SWITCH BELL]

>>RACHEL:  and brush the molars in the way back.

Other kinds of sensors that help robots are thermometers to measure temperature…

[SIZZLE]

>>RACHEL: -microphones to hear sound…

[MIC FEEDBACK]

>>RACHEL: -and cameras help them see.

[CAMERA SHUTTER]

>>RACHEL: Sensors are one of THREE main parts that make up most robots and help them do their jobs. The two other main parts of a robot are the controller and the mechanics.

>>RACHEL: Switch your brushing to the bottom of your mouth…

[SWITCH BELL]

>>RACHEL:  and brush those front teeth too.

A controller tells a robot what to do - like telling it to move or use its sensor. It's sort of like the brain of the robot.

That brain is talking to the MECHANICS of the robot. The mechanical parts of a robot, like the motor and wheels, help it move and do the job it was built for.

Switch your brushing to the other side of the bottom of your mouth…

[SWITCH BELL]

>>RACHEL: -and give your tongue a brush too.

Here’s another riddle:

A builder of robots

Making machines automatic

I use Science & Technology

Engineering & Mathematics

Who am I talking about?

>>GROUP: A Roboticist!

>>RACHEL: Roboticists are robot scientists who work in robotics. Robotics is the science of designing, building, and using robots.

[THEME SONG BEGINS]

>>RACHEL: That’s it for Chompers today, but come back tonight for more bionic brain teasers. Until then…

>>KIDS: 3, 2, 1 spit!
