Where to Listen

>> Rachel: Welcome back to Chompers! Your morning and night tooth brushing show!

Time to get brushing! Pick a side on the top of your mouth, and make sure to brush the outside of your teeth and then the inside!  Ready?

>> KIDS: Three, two, one -- BRUSH!

>> Rachel: It’s food week on Chompers, and today we’ve been learning about the things that plants eat!

This morning we talked about Venus fly traps.

Venus Fly Traps are plants with that big green mouth -- that they use to trap (SFX FLIES) BUGS.

Once they’ve caught one, the Venus fly trap DIGESTS the bug.  Remember DIGESTING is how plants and animals turn food into energy.

Switch your brushing to the other side of the top of your mouth. (SFX SWITCH) Make circles with your brush and make sure to cover the entire tooth.

Plants that eat bugs have a special name, and that was our quiz from the morning. (Quiz SFX)

What TYPE of plant is a Venus fly trap?

A Venus fly trap is a carnivorous plant!

A carnival plant? (SFX Carnival)

No, a CARNIVOROUS plant!

Switch your brushing to the bottom of your mouth. Don’t forget to brush all the way back.

Carnivorous means something that eats animals!  So a Venus fly trap is CARNIVOROUS because it eats bugs. (SFX Bug sounds).

But not every plant that eats bugs has a big green mouth.  Some plants use a kind of GLUE to catch bugs (SFX GLUE)

Glue is what the Australian Sundew plant uses to catch bugs.

Australian Sundew plants look like beautiful flowers with tiny drops of water on them. (SFX DRIP DROP)

Switch your brushing to the other side of the bottom of your mouth! And remember don’t brush too hard.

Thirsty insects see the drops of water (SFX DRIP DROP) on the Australian Sundew and fly in for a sip. (SFX FLY)

But that “water” is actually a glue that traps them! Tiny bugs get stuck in the glue, and the Australian Sundew has a tasty bug lunch! (SFX Yum!)

That’s all for Chompers today! Good night! We’ll see you tomorrow. And as always,

>>KIDS: 3, 2, 1 spit!
