>> Rachel: Welcome back to Chompers, your morning and night tooth brushing show. Today, our friend Jasmine is here with a special interview. Take it away Jasmine!
>> JASMINE: Thanks! It’s Communication Week on Chompers, so I wanted to talk to someone who helps communicate the news!
>> Rachel: But first, start brush your brushing on one side of the top of your mouth, and make sure to get the molars all the way in the back. 3 - 2 - 1 Brush!
>> Jasmine: Let’s start of, would you just introduce yourself, and tell me what your job is?
[MUSIC BEGINS]
>> Caitlin: I'm Caitlin Dickerson and I'm a reporter at a newspaper called The New York Times.
>> Jasmine: And what does a reporter do?
>> Caitlin: A reporter figures out what's happening in the country and in the world and explains it. I go out and I do interviews. And then I come back and I put it all together in a story. We also call it an article something that's very clear that explains to people the most important parts of what they need to know and that simplifies it for them.
Switch to the other side of the top of your mouth, and don’t brush to hard.
>> Jasmine: So once you've written your article or your story then what happens?
>> Caitlin: And once the stories have been spell check, they’ve been fact checked they're perfect and they're ready to deliver. We put all of our articles into the physical newspaper we print many many copies of them and we send newspapers all over the world.
>> Jasmine: Is the New York Times the only newspaper?
>> Caitlin: There are many newspapers, the New The New York Times is just one of probably thousands of newspapers that exist today.
Switch to the bottom of your mouth, and make sure you're brushing the inside, outside and chewing side of each tooth.
>> Jasmine:So when you're writing who, who are you writing for?
>> Caitlin: I'm writing for the world really. So people who have all different kinds of jobs and busy lives. They're bankers. They're teachers, they're doctors. They don't have time to figure out on their own what's happening in the world. And so my job is to tell them.
Switch to the other side of the bottom of your mouth, and give your tongue a brush too.
>> Jasmine: So, why is the news important?
>> Caitlin:Because the world is huge and there are many many many people who have many many different experiences. And it's important to know what their experiences are so that we can be helpful when we want to be helpful, so that we can understand what lives that look completely different than ours are like. The news helps to explain all these things what's happening in your life specifically but also what's happening in the lives of people around you and it's important to remember that there are a lot of other people in the world not just you.
