Where to Listen

>> RACHEL: Welcome back! It’s time for Chompers, your morning and night toothbrushing show.

Start brushing on the top of your mouth on one side, and brush the inside, outside and chewing side of each tooth.

>> KIDS: 3, 2, 1 Brush!

>> RACHEL: Its Science week, and tonight we have an answer to the quiz (SFX QUIZ) from this morning.

Long ago, milk used to make people sick. We want to know, which famous scientist made milk SAFER to drink?

Is it:

Louis Pasteur...

>> RACHEL: Ada Lovelace...

>> RACHEL: Or Isaac Newton?

>> RACHEL: Ready for the answer?

The answer is: Louis Pasteur!

>> RACHEL: Switch your brushing to the other side of the top of your mouth…

>> RACHEL: -and make little circles with your brush around each tooth.

Louis Pasteur was a MICROBIOLOGIST. That means he studied tiny, tiny living things, like BACTERIA AND GERMS. Almost 150 years ago, drinking milk was making a lot of people sick…

>> RACHEL: Pasteur guessed maybe BACTERIA could be the reason why.

Switch to the bottom of your mouth…

>> RACHEL: -and brush your front teeth too.

In science, a guess is called a HYPOTHESIS.

So Pasteur’s HYPOTHESIS was that bacteria was making people sick.

To see if their guess, or hypothesis is right, scientists do EXPERIMENTS.

And Pasteur learned by doing experiments that his HYPOTHESIS was right! It was the bacteria!

Switch to the other side of the bottom of your mouth…

>> RACHEL: -and brush the molars in the way back.

Today we heat milk up really hot to make it safer to drink...

>> RACHEL: and when we do this, we call it PASTEURIZATION.  It’s named after LOUIS PASTEUR! Louis PASTEUR, PASTUER-ization. Get it!

That’s it for Chompers tonight, but come back tomorrow for more scientific discoveries. Until then…

>> KIDS: 3, 2, 1 spit!
