[THEME SONG BEGINS]

>>RACHEL: Good morning, it’s time for Chompers! Your twice daily toothbrushing show.

It’s Teeth Week, and today we’re playing I Spy. And we’re traveling back in TIME to do it! I’ll describe what I spy, from a long, long time ago, and you have to guess what it is!

Start brushing on the top of your mouth

>>KIDS: 3, 2, 1 brush!

[THEME SONG ENDS]

>>RACHEL: Here’s your first I SPY.

I see my great great great great great great… (out of breath) grandmother.

This woman looks like she’s got a very small stick in her mouth.

[SNAP!]

>>RACHEL: It’s not a toothbrush. It’s looks like a BRANCH from a tree or a bush. And she’s chewing on it.

[CHEWING]

>>RACHEL: What is it?

What do I spy?

[MUSIC BEGINS]

>>RACHEL: Find out after you switch to the other side of the top of your mouth, but don’t brush too hard.

So, what do I spy?

>>KID: A TWIG?

>>RACHEL: A twig!

>>KID: Huh?

>>RACHEL: The first toothbrushes were TWIGS. Twigs weren’t really toothbrushes, but our ancestors chewed on them to clean their teeth. Fibers in the wood did kind of the same job as the hairs on your toothbrush. But we have toothbrushes now, so you don’t need to chew on twigs!

Switch to the bottom of your mouth…

[SWITCH BELL]

>>RACHEL: -and give your tongue a brush, too.

[BRUSHING]

>>RACHEL: Here’s your next I Spy:

Ok, we’re still in the past, and I see some guys are crushing some rocks into a powder. (SFX Rocks) Then they take some ashes -- that’s what left over after you burn a fire -- and add it to the powder.  And THEN they burn egg shells…

[EGG SHELLS]

>>RACHEL: and mix THAT in, too.

[GLOOPY GLOOP]

>>RACHEL: What are these guys making?! What do I spy?

>>KID: Toothpaste!

>>RACHEL: Toothpaste.

[MUSIC BEGINS]

Switch to the other side of the bottom of your mouth…

[SWITCH BELL]

>>RACHEL: -and brush the molars in the back, too.

We’ve time traveled to Ancient Egypt. This powder mix is TOOTHPASTE! And it’s made from rocks ash from burnt up bones, and burnt egg shells!

>>KID: HUH?

>>RACHEL: Why egg shells? Eggshells have calcium in them. And calcium is something that our teeth need to stay healthy! This paste was full of calcium and people used it to make their teeth look clean and shiny.

[DING!]
