It’s Poetry Week, and tonight we have an answer to the quiz (SFX QUIZ) from this morning. But first,

Start brushing on the top of your mouth on one side, and brush the inside, outside and chewing side of each tooth.

>> KIDS: 3, 2, 1 Brush!

>> Rachel: Which of these is a type of poetry?

Is Senryu a type of poetry?

Is Pastoral a type of poetry?

Or is Limerick a type of poetry?

Ready for the answer? (SFX DRUMROLL)

TRICK QUESTION! They’re all types of poetry!

(SFX WHat?!)

Poetry is a way to play with words, but not all poems are the same. Senryu, Pastoral and Limerick poems can sound very different from each other, but they are all still poems because they express things in a beautiful way.

Switch your brushing to the other side of the top of your mouth,  and make little circles with your brush around each tooth

Senryu is a type of poem that has special FORM, or a specific way it looks on the page.

The first line of a Senryu has as 5 beats like this: (SFX).  The second line has 7 beats (SFX).  And the last line has 5 beats (SFX).  Does that sound familiar? Yeah .. it’s like a haiku!

Switch to the bottom of your mouth, and brush your front teeth too.

PASTORAL is a type of poem that always talks about the same thing. They all have the same SUBJECT.  sheep! Well not just sheep. Pastoral poetry has to do with life in the country -- you know, where there are PASTURES.

Here’s some of a very old pastoral poem:

Not till the earth has been twice plowed, so twice

Exposed to sun and twice to coolness will

It yield what the farmer prays for...

Switch to the other side of the bottom of your mouth, and brush the molars in the way back.

Limerick is a type of poem that rhymes in a very specific way.  They can be about anything, but they’re often silly or funny, and sometimes a little bit rude!  Here’s an example:

There was an Old Man with a beard,

Who said, "It is just as I feared!—

Two Owls and a Hen, four Larks and a Wren,

Have all built their nests in my beard.

Get it? His beard was so big, birds built a nest in it!

That’s it for Chompers tonight, but come back tomorrow for more poetry! Until then,
