It’s Tongue Twisters week! (SFX GAGAGA) Tongue Twisters are phrases that are difficult to say, and tonight we’ve got one that will tie your tongue in knots! And Walter is back to help us out.
Ok here it is: TOY BOAT
>> Walter: That’s it?
>> Rachel: Yeah, that’s it! Toy boat. Think that’s too easy? Try saying it 3 times fast. Toy Boat, Toy Boat, Toy boat.
Ok you try.
>> Walter: Toy boat, toy boat, toy boat.
>> Rachel: Yeah not so easy huh? I'll tell you why after you switch to the other side of the top of your mouth, and give your tongue a brush too
Toy boat is a tough tongue twister because the words TOY and BOAT have sounds that are similar. And that confuses your brain! The sound OY in toy is kind of like the sound OA in boat. When you say it slowly, your brain has enough time to tell them apart. But when you say it over and over again, or really fast, your brain gets confused (SFX BOING), and suddenly you start saying :
>> Walter: Toy boat, toy boat, toy boat.
>> Rachel: Switch to the bottom of your mouth, and make little circles with your brush around each tooth

>> Rachel: Whew! This one is tough. I'll explain why saying “Round the rough and rugged rock the ragged rascal rudely ran” is so tough after you switch to the other side of the bottom of your mouth, and brush your front teeth too
This tongue twister is tricky because of something called alliteration. Alliteration is when the same letter or sound is repeated over and over again. So in “Round the rough and rugged rock the ragged rascal rudely ran,” the sound that you're hearing over and over again is the RRRR sound. You can use alliteration to come up with your own tongue twisters!
