>> RACHEL: Hey there! Get your senses ready. Because it’s time for Chompers, your morning and night toothbrushing show.

Start brushing on the top of your mouth on one side, and brush all the way to the molars in the back.

>> KIDS: 3, 2, 1 brush!

[THEME SONG ENDS]

It’s Senses Week, and today we’ve got some true or false for you. I’ll say something, and if you think it’s true, give a thumbs up…

[DING]

If you think it’s false,  thumbs down.

[BUZZER]

Whales, dolphins and bats have a sense called echolocation.

[DOLPHINS ECHOLOCATION SOUND]

That means they use sound - AND NOT SIGHT - to know where things are. So here’s your first true or false: Humans can use echolocation too!

Is it true or false?

The answer is… TRUE!

[DING]

[MUSIC BEGINS]

>> RACHEL: Switch your brushing to the other side of the top of your mouth…

[SWITCH BELL]

>> RACHEL: -and brush the inside, outside and chewing side of each tooth.

Some people don’t have the sense of sight. They can’t see. But what they can do is to learn echolocation. They make a clicking sound - like this.

[PERSON CLICKING THEIR TONGUE]

And by listening to the echo of the sound they can tell where they are, and how big the things around them are.

[MUSIC ENDS]

Switch to the bottom of your mouth…

[SWITCH BELL]

>> RACHEL: -and keep brushing.

Here’s your next true or false:

Some people smell colors.

So is that true or false? Can people smell colors?

The answer is… TRUE!

[DING]

>> RACHEL: Being able to smell colors is called Synesthesia.

I’ll explain after you switch to the other side of the bottom of your mouth…

[SWITCH BELL]

>> RACHEL: -and give your tongue a brush too.

VERY FEW people are born with synesthesia. Synesthesia is when a sense - like the sense of smell - happens with another sense - like the sense of sight. So someone with synesthesia might smell bread baking…

[SNIFF, YUM!]

>> RACHEL: -and see the color pink! Or they might hear a sound like this one…

[MARIMBA]

>> RACHEL: -and see polka dots!

[MUSIC ENDS]

[THEME SONG BEGINS]

>> RACHEL: That's it for Chompers today, but come back tonight for more true or false. Until then…

>> KIDS: 3, 2, 1 spit!

[THEME SONG ENDS]

>> RACHEL: Chompers is a production of Gimlet Media.
