>> Rachel: Hey there, it’s time for Chompers! Your morning and night toothbrushing show. Start brushing on the top of your mouth. Pick a side, and brush the inside, outside, and chewing side of each tooth.

>> KIDS: 3, 2, 1 brush!

[THEME SONG ENDS]

>> Rachel: It’s History Week, and today we’re exploring the history of people in Oceana.

Here’s your first travel back in time:

[TIME MACHINE LANDS]

>> Rachel: I’ve landed over 1000 years in the past. The sun is shining, birds are chirping. The ground is moving... Wait, why is the ground moving? Oh, I’m on a canoe. I’m not alone. There are many canoes, all heading towards a big island. My mates are covered with beautiful tattoos.

Who are these people?

>> TIME MACHINE:  The Māori

>> Rachel: I’ll explain after you switch your brushing to the other side of the top of your mouth…

[SWITCH BELL]

>> Rachel: -and give your tongue a brush, too.

The Māori were the first people to live in the islands of New Zealand. They traveled in canoes from other islands in Polynesia. People from Europe arrived after the Māori. And took the land.but the Maori are still around. The Māori were and still are amazing artists, carving huge wooden canoes called Waka - like the ones they used when they first traveled to Aoteroa - or New Zealand.

Switch to the bottom of your mouth…

[SWITCH BELL]

>> Rachel: -and brush in little circles around each tooth.

Here’s your next travel back in time:

[TIME MACHINE LANDS]

>> Rachel: I’ve landed much earlier back in time. I see a line of New Zealanders and Maori people. They’re all waiting for their turn to vote for the new leader of their country! And there are men AND women here.

So time machine What is this?

>> TIME MACHINE: The national election of 1893.

>> Rachel: Switch to the other side of the bottom of your mouth…

[SWITCH BELL]

>> Rachel: -and brush those molars in the back, too.

An election is when people vote for who they want to represent them. In 1893 New Zealand had an election for who would be the leader of the country. But this election was special, because for the first time, women got to vote too. New Zealand was the first country in the world to give women the right to vote. Before then, only men could vote. New Zealand set an example for the entire world - showing that women should get to vote, too!
