It’s History Week, and today we’re exploring some history from North America!

Let’s jump in back in our travel time machine and travel back in time:

[TIME MACHINE LANDS]

>> Rachel: Wow where are we?

>> TIME MACHINE: Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, United States - 1863.

>> Rachel: Oh cool. I see a tall man. He’s wearing a suit with a long coat. Oh, he’s pulling off some documents from his high top hat! He’s about to give a speech to his people!

So time machine Who’s this man?

>> TIME MACHINE: Abraham Lincoln.

>> Rachel: Switch your brushing to the other side of the top of your mouth…

[SWITCH BELL]

>> Rachel: -and brush the inside, outside, and chewing side of each tooth.

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States. He ruled the country during the American Civil War - a war that divided people from the South and people from the North. Abraham Lincoln once gave a speech where he said that all people were equal and the American people should live in a united nation. That speech still inspires the American people today., and Abraham Lincoln is remembered as one of the greatest U.S. presidents--and one who kept his documents in his hat! Practical!

Switch to the bottom of your mouth…

[SWITCH BELL]

>> Rachel: -and don’t forget your front teeth.

Here’s your next travel back in time:

[TIME MACHINE LANDS]

>> Rachel: Time machine, where are we now?

>> TIME MACHINE: It is 20 years later, in Chicago, Illinois -

>> Rachel: Whoa! I’m standing in front of a massive 10-story building. It’s peaking at 138 feet!!  That sounds small today, but back at that time it was HUGE. It was the tallest building people had ever seen!

So time machine What do I spy?

>> TIME MACHINE: The Home Insurance Building.

>> Rachel: Switch to the other side of the bottom of your mouth…

[SWITCH BELL]

>> Rachel: -and give your tongue a brush, too.

The Home Insurance Building in Chicago was the world’s first skyscraper. And the person who designed it, Major William LeBaron Jenney, was named the “Father of the Skyscraper.” He used a steel frame to support the walls and enormous weight of it. At that time, houses and buildings were mostly made of wood. The Home Insurance Building was one of the first buildings to made using steel.

[THEME SONG BEGINS]
