>> RACHEL: Welcome back. it's time for Chompers, your morning and night toothbrushing show.
Tonight our friend Jasmine is back with a special interview. Jasmine, take it away!
Start brushing on the top of your mouth, and brush the inside, outside and chewing side of each tooth
>> Kids: 3, 2, 1 brush!
>>JASMINE: It’s Earth Week, so we’re talking to Bren Smith, an ocean farmer whose work helps heal planet earth!
>>JASMINE: You told us you grow something called Kelp. What is kelp?
>>BREN: Kelp is a seaweed and maybe you've seen it on the beach it's sort of been long blades of seaweed and it's brown. But when you cook it it turns bright green.
>>JASMINE: Switch your brushing to the other side of the top of your mouth, and brush the molars in the way back.
>>JASMINE: And what does kelp taste like?
>>BREN: Honestly the first time I tried it it was gross. But over time we learned not only how to farm it but how to cook it. So our kelp has a very mild taste and it's a bit chewy And what we turned it into is spaghetti. We also cook it in barbecue sauce, we turn it into chips and even ice cream.
>>JASMINE: Your hear that Chompions, Ice cream! Switch to the bottom of your mouth, and keep brushing.
So Kelp is good to eat! Is it also good for the ocean?
>>BREN: Yeah so kelp is really good for the ocean it actually puts oxygen out into the water
>>BREN: So I don't know if you know this but every other breath you breathe comes from the ocean that's where it comes.
>>JASMINE: Wait a minute. So the oxygen that we breathe comes from the ocean?
>>BREN: Yeah half of the oxygen that we breathe comes from the ocean.
>>JASMINE: Switch to the other side of the bottom of your mouth, and brush those front teeth too.
>>JASMINE: And what kelp has to do with that?
>>BREN: Well think of kelp as the underwater tree. So all the trees around you are taking are know taking sunlight and then breathing oxygen out into the out into the air. Well the plants in the ocean do the exact same thing but we just don't see them so we forget about them. so kelp is one of the things that keeps the ocean alive
>>JASMINE: That's so cool. That's it for chompers tonight. Special thanks to Bren Smith. If you want to learn more about how he’s helping planet earth, visit Greenwave.org. Until next time. Bren count us off!
>>BREN: 3, 2, 1 spit!
