Today on Chompers, a folktale from Sweden.

Where to Listen

>> Rachel: Hey there, it's time for more Chompers, your morning and night toothbrushing show!

It’s Folktales Week, and today our story comes from a country called Sweden.  Sweden is a country full of forests and lakes, where it’s cold and snowy for a lot of the year!

Let’s start by making small circles around each tooth with your toothbrush!

>> Rachel: Once upon a time there was a family where the husband and the wife had the divided up the work so they could get it all done.  The husband would go into the forest and chop wood for the fire (SFX chopping), and the wife would make the bread, care for the cow, and cook dinner (SFX dinner bell).  But the forest was cold (SFX Wind howling), the firewood was heavy, the snow was deep (SFX Snow Crunch), and the house was warm … and so the husband started to wonder if the wife had it a little easier than him.

Find out after you switch your brushing to the other side of the top of your mouth, and brush your molars in the way back too.

Darling, the husband said one day, I think you have it so easy.  You stay in the warm house all day, next to the cozy fire, or in the warm barn petting our cow.

The wife raised her eyebrow.  Oh really? She said. If I have it so easy, would you like to switch places with me?

He thought for a moment.  Making bread didn’t seem so hard.  Feeding the cow seemed easy enough. And he’d EATEN plenty of dinners, so he figured he could MAKE dinner too.

Ok, the husband said. Yes, let’s switch places.

You switch to the bottom of your mouth, and give your tongue a brush too.

So the next morning the husband gave the wife his axe and she set out to the forest to chop wood. (SFX chopping)

So the husband looked at his list of chores. First up, making bread. He mixed up the ingredients and put the loaf in the oven and soon the smell of baking bread was making him hungry.

Ah, he thought to himself, I’ll get some bacon!  So he went down to the cellar where the bacon was kept.

Switch to the other side of the bottom of your mouth, and don’t brush too hard

In the cellar the man found the very last piece of bacon.  He climbed back up the stairs, his mouth watering just thinking about it. (SFX Slurp) And then at the top of the stairs, he realized -- if he was going to eat this salty bacon, he would also get thirsty.  He was going to need some cider too! (SFX popping bottle) So he set the bacon on the top step, andr turned back down to grab a jug of cider.  But as he was pouring the cider (SFX), he heard a terrible noise at the top of the stairs.

 (SFX Dog barking)

>> Rachel: It was the dog!! She had grabbed the bacon and run off with it!

Find out what happens tonight when you come back to brush again with Chompers.  Until then…
