>>Rachel: Good morning! It’s time for Chompers, your morning and night toothbrushing show. It’s Music Week and today we’ve got some musical riddles to get your brain bouncing to the beat.

But first, start brushing on the top of your mouth on one side, making small circles with your brush around each tooth.

>> KIDS: 3, 2, 1 brush!

>>Rachel: Here’s your first riddle:

I’m a very heavy instrument

My keys are black and white

I’m both string and percussion

And one kind is an upright

What am I?

(PAUSE)

>> KIDS: A Piano

Pianos are both a percussion instrument and a string instrument because of the way they work inside.

I’ll explain, after you switch to the other side of the top of your mouth (SFX).

When you press a key on the piano, a little hammer strikes a string inside the piano. That makes the sound! (SFX PIANO NOTE) So because a piano has both strings AND is played by striking, it’s both a string and a percussion instrument.

Here’s your next riddle -- it’s a really hard one!

Some types are found on fish

Some measure weight

But when it comes to music

I’m in groups of 5, 6,12 or 8!

What am I?

You’ll find out after you switch to the bottom of your mouth (SFX), and make sure to reach the molar teeth all the way in the back.

>> Kids: A Scale!

>>Rachel: A musical scale is a group of notes, like this (SFX G SCALE). In a scale, the notes are played in an order -- from lowest (SFX LOW G SCALE UP) to highest   (SFX HIGH G) … or from highest (SFX HIGH G SCALE DOWN) to lowest (SFX LOW G).  Your music teacher might tell you to practice your scales so you can get better at your instrument.

Switch your brushing to the other side of the bottom of your mouth (SFX), but don’t brush too hard.

Here’s you last riddle:

ONE note on a piano

You use them to open doors

Many songs are IN one

Many melodies and scores

What am I?

Come back to Chompers tonight for the answer, and for more harmonious head scratchers. Until then, make sure to rinse and-

>>KIDS: 3, 2, 1, spit!
